Switching from a Dongle (USB) License to a Named User (NU) License in IronCAD

Knowledge Base Article: Switching from a Dongle (USB) License to a Named User (NU) License in IronCAD

This article explains the official process for converting an existing IronCAD dongle-based (USB hardware key) license to a Named User (NU) license. A Named User license is tied to a specific individual computer rather than a physical USB dongle, allowing greater flexibility in activating between machines (e.g., use on multiple machines by the same user).

Important: This conversion is irreversible. Once the dongle license is removed and the dongle is destroyed or returned, the USB key can no longer be used.

Prerequisites

  • The customer must have administrative rights on the computer where the dongle is currently plugged in.
  • IronCAD version 2020 or newer must be installed (the License Management Tool is included).
  • The dongle must be plugged into the computer during the export process.

Step-by-Step Process for the Customer

  1. Export the license from the dongle

    • Insert the USB dongle into the computer.
    • Open the IronCAD License Management Tool: Start → All Programs → IronCAD [Version] → License Management Tool
    • In the tool, select Manage Dongle Licenses.
    • Click Remove (this will detach the license from the dongle and generate export files).
    • Save the exported files to a known location.
  2. Destroy the dongle or prepare it for return

    • Physically destroy the USB dongle in a way that makes it completely inoperable (e.g., break the USB connector or smash the body). OR
    • Keep the dongle intact if you prefer to return it physically to IronCAD by shipping it back to IronCAD.
  3. Provide proof of destruction or return

    • If destroying the dongle: Take a clear, well-lit photo showing: – The destroyed dongle – The hardware ID label still clearly visible and legible
    • If returning the dongle: Package it securely for mailing.
  4. Email everything to IronCAD Send the following to both of these addresses:

    Required attachments:

    • The exported license file(s) from Step 1
    • Photo of the destroyed dongle (with visible hardware ID) OR shipping tracking number if returning the dongle
    • Your full name, company name, and the email address that should be associated with the new Named User license
    • The serial number or entitlement ID (if known)
  5. IronCAD processes the switch Once IronCAD receives and verifies the exported files and proof of dongle destruction/return, the licensing team will:

    • Invalidate the old dongle license
    • Issue a new Named User activation code tied to the specified user
    • Send activation instructions (usually within 1–3 business days)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I keep using the dongle while waiting for the new license? No. The license is removed from the dongle during the export process, so IronCAD will no longer function with the dongle after Step 1. IronCAD can provide temporary time-limited licenses during the transition if needed to continue working with IronCAD.

Q: What if I accidentally delete the exported files? The license cannot be recovered without the export files. You would need to purchase a new license.

Q: Is there a fee for switching to Named User? Typically there is no additional fee for the conversion itself, provided the original dongle license is valid and properly returned/destroyed.

Q: Can I switch only some seats if I have multiple dongles? Yes. Each dongle must be processed individually following the same steps.

For any questions or issues during the process, contact support@ironcad.com before removing the license from the dongle.
